AFARIN-i ZARTOSHT

1.        dahmŰ ahmi ‚frÓ-vacŚ,[paiti-aoxta zarathushtrŰ puthra kava vÓsht‚spa,] hvarenanghŚ me sadhayehi, ‚at aoxta zarathushtrŰ kavŰish vÓsht‚spahe, ‚frÓn‚mi tava nara danghu-paiti vohu-jÓti us- jÓti darekhem-jÓti, jaite te nar„m, jaite te n‚irik„m, jaite te puthra us-zhayŚŮte tanu-kereta.

 

I am a pious man, who speaks words of blessing.'
'Thou appearest unto me full of Glory.'
And Zarathushtra spake unto king Vishtaspa, saying: 'I bless thee, O man! O lord of the country! with the living of a good life, of an exalted life, of long life. May thy men live long! May thy women live long! May sons be born unto thee of thy own body!

 

 

 

2.        aÍva te bav‚hi żatha j‚m‚spŰ, uta ‚frÓnem kerenav‚t żatha danghÍush vÓsht‚sp‚i,
sevishtŰ bav‚hi żatha mazdŚ,
verethrajŚ żatha thraÍtaonŰ,
amavŚ żatha j‚m‚spŰ,
ash-varecŚ żatha kava usa,
pauru-jirŰ żatha zoshnarŰ,
zaÍnanghuŮtem bav‚hi żatha taxmŰ urupa.

 

'Mayest thou have a son like Jamaspa, and may he bless thee as (Jamaspa blessed] Vishtaspa (the lord) of the country!
'Mayest thou be most beneficent, like ...
'Mayest thou be fiend-smiting, like Thraetaona!
'Mayest thou be strong, like Jamaspa!
'Mayest thou be well-armed, like Takhma-Urupa!

 

 

 

3.        hvarenanghuŮtem bav‚hi żatha żŰ żimŰ xshaÍtŰ hv„thwŰ, hazangra-żaoxshtyŰ bav‚hi żatha azhŰhish dah‚k‚i akha-daÍna, ukhrem aojishtem bav‚hi żatha keres‚spem, hudhŚnghem vy‚xnem bav‚hi żatha urv‚xshahe, srÓrem kehrpem an‚stravanem bav‚hi żatha kava sy‚varsh‚nŰ.

 

'Mayest thou be glorious, like Yima Khshaeta, the good shepherd!
'Mayest thou be instructed with a thousand senses, like Azhi Dahaka, of the evil law!
'Mayest thou be awful and most strong, like Keresaspa!
'Mayest thou be a wise chief of assemblies, like Urvakhshaya!
'Mayest thou be beautiful of body and without fault, like Syavarshana!

 

 

 

4.        pouru-gŰ bav‚hi żatha ‚thwy‚nŰish, pouru-aspem bav‚hi żatha pourushaspem, ashava bav‚hi żatha zarathushtrŰ spit‚mŰ, rangh„m dŻraÍ-p‚ran„m bav‚hi żatha żŰ vifrŰ nav‚zŰ, urvathŰ bav‚hi żazatan„m żatha zaranem mashy‚n„m.

 

'Mayest thou be rich in cattle, like an Athwyanide!
'Mayest thou be rich in horses, like Pourushaspa!
'Mayest thou be holy, like Zarathushtra Spitama!
'Mayest thou be able to reach the Rangha, whose shores lie afar, as Vafra Navaza was!
'Mayest thou be beloved by the gods and reverenced by men.

 

 

 

5.        zayŚŮte haca vŰ dasa puthra, thr‚yŰ bav‚hi żatha athaurunŰ, thr‚yŰ bav‚hi żatha rathaÍsht‚rahe, thr‚yŰ bav‚hi żatha v‚stryehe fshuyaŮtŰ, aeva te bav‚hi żatha danghÍush vÓsht‚sp‚i.

 

May ten sons be born of you! In three of them mayest thou be an Athravan! In three of them mayest thou be a warrior! In three of them mayest thou be a tiller of the ground! And may one be like thyself, O Vishtaspa!

 

 

 

6.        aurvat-aspem bav‚hi żatha hvare, raocinavaŮtem bav‚hi żatha mŚnghem, saocinavaŮtem bav‚hi żatha ‚tarem, tizhinavaŮtem bav‚hi żatha mithrem, huraodhem verethrajanem bav‚hi żatha sraoshem ashÓm.

 

'Mayest thou be swift-horsed, like the Sun!
'Mayest thou be resplendent, like the moon!
'Mayest thou be hot-burning, like fire!
'Mayest thou have piercing rays, like Mithra!
'Mayest thou be tall-formed and victorious, like the devout Sraosha!

 

 

 

7.        arsh-tkaÍshem bav‚hi żatha rashnush, dushmainyŻ-jayaŮtem bav‚hi żatha verethrakhnem ahuradh‚tem, pouru-hv‚threm bav‚hi żatha r‚manŰ hv‚strahe, a-żaskem a-mahrkem bav‚hi żatha kava husrava,

 

'Mayest thou follow a law of truth, like Rashnu!
'Mayest thou be a conqueror of thy foes, like Verethraghna, made by Ahura!
Mayest thou have fulness of welfare, like Rama Hvastra!
'Mayest thou be freed from sickness and death, like king Husravah!

 

 

 

8.        pasca ‚frÓnem aipi-jasaiti vahishtem ahŻm ashaon„m raocanghem vÓspŰ-hv‚threm, atha jamy‚t żatha ‚frÓn‚mi. humatan„m hŻxtan„m hvarshtan„m żadac‚ anyadac‚ verezyamnan„mca v‚verezanan„mca mahÓ aibÓ-jaret‚rŰ naÍnaÍst‚rŰ żathan‚ vohun„m mahÓ.

'Then the blessing goes for the bright, all-happy, blissful abode of the holy Ones.
'May it happen unto thee according to my blessing!
"Let us embrace and propagate the good thoughts, good words, and good deeds that have been done and that will be done here and elsewhere, that we may be in the number of the good.
Yatha ahu vairyo: The will of the Lord is the law of holiness ....
'Ashem Vohu: Holiness is the best of all good ....
'[Give] unto that man brightness and glory, .... give him the bright, all-happy, blissful abode of the holy Ones.'
