IRANIAN LANGUAGES

SHUGHNANI

Shughnani is one of the Pamiri languages, belonging to the Eastern branch of Iranian languages. It is mainly spoken in and around Kharugh in Tajik Badakhshan, but also in the neighboring countries.

It was standardised in the Latin script during the 1930s, but later banned from the public sphere. It was not until the new Tajik language law adopted in 1989 that new books written in Shughnani began to appear, this time in the Cyrillic script.  These books consist mainly of poems and premiers.

Shughnani has however also appeared in local newspapers in Badakhshan, but then only in terms of poetry and short stories.  Radio and TV-broadcasts in Shughnani are allegedly rather limited.
