Wednesday, January 20, 1999

TEHRAN -- Head of the provincial office of Cultural Heritage Organization in Qazvin said that some 55 historical buildings have been registered as national monuments in that province.

Mohammad Nader Mohammadzadeh, in an interview with IRNA, said that Sa'd-ul-Saltaneh caravanserai and Naqoos Tower were registered as national monuments this year and that they are now under the protection of Cultural Heritage Organization.

Referring to the importance of cultural heritage, Mohammadzadeh noted that people from all walks of life should try to preserve the valuable cultural and historical relics.

He underlined that the preservation of cultural heritage is vital for development of tourism sector in the country. Mohammadzadeh further expressed dissatisfaction with lack of enough budget for preservation and renovation of Qazvin Province's cultural and historical monuments. He said that the budget earmarked for Qazvin Province's cultural heritage does not meet the organization's needs in the fields of research, study, repair and preservation of historical monuments.

Mohammadzadeh went on to say that the province needs some 300 million rials per year to repair and preserve its cultural and historical monuments. He called for financial support from all executive organs in the province, saying that, unfortunately, no provincial credit has thus far been allocated to cultural heritage office in Qazvin. In conclusion, he called on Qazvin's governor general and head of the provincial planning and budget office to extend financial support to the cultural heritage office.
