New Dam On Polvar River and Possible Threat to Pasargad

20 February 2001

CAIS has learnt that a new dam is under construction by the government President Mohammd Khatami, only 9 kilometers away from the mausoleum of Cyrus the Great. The site is also 4 kilometers from the city of Pasargad (Pasargadae), the first capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire and about 50 kilometers from Persepolis, built by Darius the Great.

According to the source who wished to remain anonymous for his safety, the construction of the new dam was planned in 1988, and was sanctioned by the Islamic Republic's former premier Mir Hoseein Mousavi and endorsed by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenin, the founder of the Islamic regime.

It seems the first phase of construction has already been completed, without public knowledge.

According to the report, one of the geologists hired by the construction company, had warned there will be a threat to Pasargad and the mausoleum of Cyrus the Great, once the dam becomes operational in less than three years time. The geologist claims the regime and company are aware of the threat, as he already had warned them. He was advised to keep his silence.
