Evidence of 3,000-Year-Old Civilization Found in Noshahr

News Category: Pre-Islamic & Islamic Periods

 27 April 2002

TEHRAN -- The Cultural Heritage Department of Mazandaran Province announced on Saturday that they had discovered evidence of a 3,000-year-old civilization during excavations in the Kajour district of Noshahr in Mazandaran.

A report released on Saturday stated that the discovery points to the existence of a human community there in the first millennium BC. The report also suggests that the discovery could clarify some aspects of the history of ancient Kajour.

There is now evidence showing cultural continuity in Kajour from the first millennium BC till the middle of the Islamic era.

The head of the Kajour region archaeological team, Reza Mousavi, said that comprehensive studies of the discovery have clarified the general culture and historical structure of ancient Kajour.
