A killer earthquake that razed a major
part of the southwestern Iranian town of Bam, killing
thousands of people and wounding numerous others,
destroyed some 80 percent of the historical areas in the
Kerman province, including the world renowned Bam
citadel.
A large mud mosque inside the citadel was also razed to
the ground. The mosque had recently undergone
restoration.
The mosque was among the oldest and most elegant mosques
in the country, built in the Seljuk period with mud
brick.
The Bam citadel sat on top of a huge slab of rock as a
key stronghold. It comprised four parts and 38 watch
towers.
