Studies on Khajou Bridge Lead to New Discoveries

The first phase of the pathology studies and excavations in Khajou Bridge in Isfahan reveals new archaeological information.

According to head of the project Mohsen Javeri, the first phase of studies led to the discovery of foundations dating back to pre-Safavid times, presumably to the Timurids, which indicate that even before the construction of Khajou Bridge at the Safavid era, another one existed on the same spot.

A ramp from the Safavid dynasty, covered systematically with river stones, and one of its edges were also found during the studies, and the experts believe that digging the second pillar of the bridge will unearth its other edge.

Javeri explained that the activities were mainly undertaken to identify the reasons of humidity penetration into the pillars of the bridge, and added that they have so far been successful in reducing the problem.

Khajou Bridge is one of the valuable monuments of the world-famous city of Isfahan which was constructed on Zayandehrud river during the Safavids, based on the model of the other bridge of the river, Si-yo-Se-Pol.

The second phase of work on the historical bridge will likely start at the end of spring.
