Bam citadel in the world heritage list

28 December 2004

The certificate for the registration of Bam citadel in the world heritage list was handed over to the Iranian officials in Bam yesterday afternoon.

Handing over the Bam certificate in a special ceremony in Bam citadel research site, Mounir Bouchenaki, UNESCO assistant director general for culture, said, "We hope that Bam will be showered with international aids. The next steps in the renovation of Bam citadel will be a long-term plan, research on the mud-brick architecture, and cooperation with countries and organizations around the world."

In this ceremony held at the presence of Mohammad Beheshti, director of Iranian cultural heritage research center, Abdolhassan Vatandoust, Iranian CHTO deputy of international affairs, Abdin Saleh, director of UNESCO office in Iran, and Ahmad Jalali, Iranian representative in UNESCO, Bouchenaki unveiled a memorial plate by the Bam citadel entrance.

About the limitations of registering historical sites in world heritage list, Bouchenaki said, "Making decisions and reconsidering them in this case resides with the world heritage committee."

"Iran deserves to have more sites in the world heritage list than the 6 ones it already has", said Bouchenaki.

Mounir Bouchenaki, in Iran for a 7-day visit, is going to see Pasargad heritage site and heritage-rich Tangeh-bolaghi that will be washed over next year due to the inauguration of Sivand dam.

Mohammad Beheshti, Abdolhassan Vatandoust, and Eskandar Mokhtari, director of Bam salvage site, were the recipients of Bam citadel certificate.
