22 January 2004

LONDON, (CAIS) -- Dr. A. Shapur Shahbazi, an Eastern Oregon University history professor will be heard worldwide May 16 on British Broadcasting Corporation radio (BBC).

Dr. Shahbazi will travel to Portland on Friday to discuss Iranian artwork with BBC radio. He will connect with the British network via National Public Radio at Oregon Public Broadcasting's office in Portland.

"BBC radio asked me to go with their people to Iran to give them a documentary/commentary on several places on art," said Shahbazi. "They said they would provide financial support and expenses, but because I have classes I can't leave."

Shahbazi, who has been teaching history at EOU since 1985, will discuss the archeological treasure of Persepolis in Iran and will present a Persian-centered view on how modern Iranians see themselves and their history.

"It won't be limited to Persepolis alone, but that would be the major area we focus on since I have been inherently involved in Persepolis for the past 30 years," said Shahbazi.

Vesta Sarkhosh, a Western Asiatic Department of Antiquities curator at the British Museum in London, recommended Shahbazi to BBC by Sarkhosh would also be interviewed for the program.

The BBC will recognize both Shahbazi and EOU during the broadcast. The show will be featured on BBC Radio 3, a cultural channel for the United Kingdom, during an upcoming Sunday afternoon program.

"It will be marked as commentary by Shapur Shahbazi and Eastern Oregon University will be acknowledged," said Shahbazi. "The University will share in this event through me. It is highly prestigious publicity to be broadcast throughout the world."

"Persepolis Regained" will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Sunday Feature slot on May 16 from 9:30 - 10:15 p.m. BST. That would be 1:30 - 2:15 p.m. PST.
