Egypt Dismisses Reports of Hauling Darius’ Statue

12 June 2004

Egyptian authorities have denied earlier reports that they have nabbed a Canadian man smuggling a statue of Darius III.

A few months ago, Egypt’s official news agency released a brief article on a Canadian oil expert who was arrested in Cairo’s international airport while smuggling an ancient statue of the great Iranian king (336BC – 330BC).

The arrestee had then dismissed smuggling charges, claiming he had received the figurine as a gift during his stay in Iran. An official in Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced Egyptians have dismissed the report.

Egypt used to be one of the provinces of the enormous Persian Empire since the sixth century BC till 332BC, when Alexander of Macedonia put an end to Iranian’s rule over the land and to the Achaemenid dynasty.
