News Category: Prehistory

 26 October 2004

Excavations in the archeological site of Toul-Talesh have revealed that three thousand years ago women enjoyed equal footing as men the political, military and governing system of the era.

According to Fars news agency, Talesh, which is located in the northern and northwestern part of Gilan province, played an effective role in introducing Iron Age civilization in the first and second millennium BC to the Iranian plateau.

The head of the archeological team operating in Talesh, Mohammad Reza Khalatbari said that graves of three women have been unearthed in the area along with armaments. This indicated that women in the area exerted a special role in military and government hierarchy, he said.

We have found a grave of a woman in which there are remains of jewelry and ornaments and also 10 other corpses which were buried along with the remains of several males.

The excavation proved 3,500 years of civilization in Talesh.

Khalatbari further said that body of a pregnant woman has also been unearthed along with the skeleton of an infant.
