Field Cleared for Robat-Sharaf Excavations

28 August 2004

Director of Robat-Sharaf Archaeological Site has said that operations are currently underway to clear the wastes which was dumped in an area surrounding Robat-Sharaf ancient monument near Sarakhs in Khorasan province, ISNA reported.

Ali Qandahari asserted the operations that started two months ago are in their final stage and they are aimed at preparing the archaeological site for new phase of archaeological excavations and restoration work.

He asserted that bricks, pieces of stone and all garbage remaining from previous years are presently in the workshop.

The official added that if Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization agrees with new archaeological excavations, about 90 percent of the budget will be allocated for research, including documentation of Robat, deciphering ancient inscriptions and translating them. "There are presently nine ancient inscriptions that belong to fifth and sixth centuries," he pointed out.

Robat-Sharaf or desert palace is one of the important monuments dating back to Seljuk dynasty.
