Iranian Experts to Restudy Elamite Inscriptions

03 December 2004

In order to correct the latest studies on Elamite inscriptions, two Iranian experts of ancient scripts are to begin rereading and classifying over 400 of the inscriptions in late December, the director of the Susa Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department announced on Thursday.

“Dr. Abdolmajid Arfa’i and another expert will reread the inscriptions discovered in Susa, Haft-Tappeh, and Chogha Zanbil over the past few years,” said Mahdi Qanbari.

The Elamite sites of Susa, Chogha Zanbil, and Haft-Tappeh, which are located in Khuzestan Province, are among the main ancient sites of Iran.

“Some of the inscriptions have been previously read, but Dr. Arfa’i and his colleague plan to correct the surveys carried out on the inscriptions in order to classify the relics in the Susa Museum,” Qanbari added.

A total of 400 Elamite inscriptions were read and translated over the past year. These inscriptions shed light on the lifestyles of the people who lived in Susa in the Elamite era.
