08 December 2004

Operations are currently underway to restore a historic adobe fortification of the Iranian central city of Yazd.

The castle is composed of a tower, moat, gate and a fortress which once protected the city against invasion, said Mohsen Zakeri-Nia, a local official with Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization.
Yazd is one of the few Iranian cities that still boast some of their forts are still left standing.

"The last time operations were undertaken to restore the city's fortifications was during the reign of Prince Mohammad which started in 1236 AH," Zakeri-Nia said.

The most ancient section of the fortification has four gates, later increased to 15 when the last one was built around the city, he noted. The city's fortifications boasted of 90 watchtowers and 20 control towers.

During the revamp project, expert would try to reinforce the fort’s foundation and annexes and to reconstruct the damaged sections of the edifice, he concluded.
