Pasargad memorial plate that shows its being registered in the world
heritage list was hanged before the mausoleum of Cyrus the Great, the
founder of the Achaemenian dynasty.
Mounir Bouchenaki, UNESCO assistant director general for culture,
unveiled this plate in the presence of several officials of the Iranian
cultural heritage and tourism organization.
Bouchenaki, first-time visitor of Pasargad and amazed at the immensity
of this mausoleum, said, “Iran deserves to have more sites in the
world heritage list than the 6 ones it already has.”
Pasargad is the 5th ancient site in Iran that was registered in the
world heritage list due to its many distinctive features in the last
UNESCO meeting held in China in last July. Pasargad ancient site, 70 km.
north of Persepolis in Fars province, consists of many historical
treasures like Cyrus Mausoleum and Public Audience Palace, and is the
first Achaemenian capital in which the oldest Iranian garden system
called Chahar-bagh (4 gardens) was used.
Bouchenaki also visited the gardens of Achaemenian kings and Cambyses
Mausoleum. Mohammad-hassan Talebian, director of Parse & Pasargad
research foundation, explained the preservation and protection procedure
for these sites to UNESCO assistant director general. Iranian CHTO
officials also explained about the sites that will be washed over by the
water in Sivand dam and this organization’s measures to prevent more
harm to the treasures in this region.
18-km Tangeh-bolaghi that according to some experts has been the
king’s road, in a distance of 4 km from Pasargad world heritage site,
is the most important ancient road in Iran and used to connect Pasargad
to Persepolis. It contains residences that date back to more than 2000
years ago.
At the beginning of his 7-day visit to Iran, Mounir Bouchenaki took a
trip to Bam and unveiled the world heritage memorial plate for the Bam
citadel.
