Tourists in the ancient Iranian town of Bishapur
are soon able to walk around at night, thanks to new lighting
system being put in place at the site, once a Sasanid resort.
Head of the Bishapur research site Mosayyeb Amiri said studies
into the installation of the lighting system were conducted a
few months ago.
“The project is carried out in two phases. The first phase
includes lighting of major areas of the town including its
towers and ramparts, hall, Anahita temple, the mosaic ivan and
ways leading to them. The second phase, scheduled for next
Iranian year, includes lighting of other areas in the town,”
he noted.
In addition to boosting its tourists share, the project plays an
important role in providing added security for the site.
Bishapur was built late in the reign of Shapur I, the second Sasanid
king of kings, on his orders. It is considered a prime
example of the urban architecture of the time. Since roman
engineers and workers held captive in Iran were used to built
the city, its structure is different from the mainstream ancient
Iranian urban architecture.
Bishapur is located by the Shapur river in the Khuzestan
province. Part of the town is protected by setting up fences
around it, while there are some security problems at night. The
hope is, once in place, the lighting could serve as a deterrence
against possible thefts.
