During the second season of excavations in Forg
Fortress, in the eastern city of Birjand, the plan of its
southwestern area was determined.
The excavation works resulted in unearthing of connection spaces
such as hallways, areas buried under debris, and the entrance of
the first story of the southern tower.
The newly discovered part of the fortress has a multi-storey architecture, which its caved in roof had buried the walls and
plan of the section.
Forg Fortress was built in early 17th century at the time of
Nader-Shah Afshar, and has three interior parts housing the
servants, the military guards and the main core or the citadel
which was the residence of the rulers. The fortress was expanded
during Qajar Dynasty.
It has 18 towers and is located on top of a cliff 90 kilometers
out of Birjand
