New round of studies at the burnt city in southeastern Iran has revealed that a contagious disease had raged among the children at the time. An anthropologist and member of the explorations team said in the cemetery of the city a large of number of baby skeletons were unearthed.

"An opened trench exposed a large number of babies from various ages, tucked together at the same level, suggesting the kids had been subject to death over a short period, induced by an epidemic outbreak," the expert noted.

He added the identification of the kind of the epidemic called for costly genetic-molecular tests not available in Iran. The remains have been preserved in a way as to facilitate further research as the occasion rises.

During the past seven seasons of study in the burnt city instances of skin cancer and bone diseases have been identified.

Located in the Sistan-Baluchestan province, the burnt city has so far yielded valuable finds.
