The
arrival of one American archaeologist and one of his
prominent Iranian counterparts has given momentum to a
drive to excavate the historical site of Jundi Shapour in
Khuzestan Province, southwest of Iran.
The historical site, one of the monuments left from the Sasanid
Dynasty, is left in disrepair, even farmers and some local
authorities have unwisely decided to ruin the property.
“Last month Dr. Masoud Azarnoush, head of the National Archaeology
Institute, and a representative of the US Archaeological Association visited the site and finished
the assessment study in 3 days,” said Mina Alizadeh,
director of the Cultural Heritage Organization in
Khuzestan Province. “The study has provided several
solutions to salvage the site from dilapidation.
Jundi Shapour was a sprawling Sasanid city and holds the
first world university and hospital, later buried under
sand dunes. Later archaeologists managed to recover its
university from the sand.
