Last Section of Iran’s Largest Brick Fort Unearthed

28 July 2004

As the fourth season of excavation in Roodkhan Fort, Iran’s biggest brick castle, finished, archaeologists managed to dig out all sections of this ancient monument north of the country.

Mainly made of brick and stone, the fort covers an area of 2.6 hectares and stands on mountainous area of Fooman, in Gilan Province.

“In the fourth and last season of excavation, we could unearth 62 embankments and over 1,500 meters of brick walls and fences. Now the whole fort is discovered,” said Bijan Zohab, deputy of Gilan Cultural heritage Organization.

Archaeologists also learned that the castle had two sections: one administrative and the other military, which housed a garrison. People used to live in the military compartment, equipped with utility services. Experts believe it dates back to Saljuq era (1040-1220).
