Employees
of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National
Academy of Sciences of Arran (the modern republic of Azerbaijan
- ANAS) have found out ruins of a city concerning from Sasanids
and 9th centuries in the territory of village Beyimli of the
Agsy district.
As was informed to correspondent of AzerTAj at the Institute,
the city territory of which makes about 9 hectares, surround
majestic fortifications height of which reaches 15-16 meters.
During
research it has been established, that the fortifications
consisting of several layers, have been constructed in step
style from a crude brick which structure includes a straw mix.
During the preliminary prospecting search carried out under the
direction of archaeologist Gafar Jabiyev, there has been found a
rich cultural layer thickness of which reaches 1,4 meters
characteristic for the cities of the early Middle Ages.
Unfortunately,
as a result of numerous long-term plowing, territory for crops
of cotton, grain and grapes, the top layer of 0,5-0,6 meters
have been entirely destroyed, by thickness of the cultural
layer, thus, many most unique historical subjects which have
appeared on surface, passing from hands in hands, have been
lost.
During prospecting search on depth of 0,5-1,4 meters, there have
been found out ruins of streets, houses, the rests of the
centers, furnaces and other objects of industrial purpose, and
also other numerous samples of material culture - various kind
ceramics without enamel, industrial waste products, metal and
glass subjects.
Ruins
testify that construction basically was conducted with use of
river stone, crude, and in part – of brick. Among the
findings, it is found out characteristic for the important
religious - public buildings of this period of stone column.
Researchers believe that this place corresponds to the city of
Mehravan based during arrival to Iranian Parthian of Albania of
the Mehranids.
Geographical
coordinates also testify to this. After conquer of the territory
of Arran province (modern Azerbaijan) by the Arab army, the name
of this city in historical sources was not mentioned. The said
version also corresponds to notes of the medieval historian Musa
Kalankatuklu about the basis of the city of Mehrevan. He writes,
that the founder of Mehranids dynasty, Mehran being afraid of
revenge by the Sasanid governor Khsrow Parviz II, has decided to
run on the north together with his family to be united with the
Khazars.
Under the description of the historian this territory was hilly
and possessed a temperate climate.
Taking into account value of recently found out ruins of city in
studying some questions, in our history, the Academic Council of
the Institute has decided to continue their archaeological
researches.
Province
of Arran was separated from mainland Iran in 1831 and 21
February 1828, as the result of Gulistan andTurkamanchai
treaties between Iran and Russia at the time of infamous Qajar
king, Fath'ali Shah. Arran after the Russian revolution became
as constituent republic of the USSR, and changed its name to the
Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. Neely created Azerbaijan
declared itself independent of the USSR in August 1991, and
became a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States and as
an independent state.
