Researchers to Determine Engineering Methods of Construction In Ancient Iran

15 June 2004

As geophysical studies and analytical research in the historical site of Persepolis come to an end, Iranian researchers hope to determine the engineering methods used for construction projects during ancient Persia.

Studies began 2 years ago and 6 months ago enter their second phase, giving priority to such issues as geology, construct analysis and climactic studies. “We started our geological activities before last year’s devastating quake in Bam.

Previous studies had found the Persepolis is crucial in terms of construction, the selection of construction materials and geological studies,” said Mohammad Hassan Talebian, project manager.

“Hopefully, our increased knowledge will help us to conserve the site better and concoct new methods for today’s civil projects.”

Persepolis is built on a plate near Rahmat Mountain, 57 km north of Shiraz. Its construction supposedly started in 518 BC, as the Achaemenids dynasty rose to power in ancient Persia.
