Search
for Iron-Age Architectural Remains
in Northern Iran

Archeologists are searching for the early
architectural remains, dating back to the Iron Age to the third
millennium B.C. in the historical hill of Kalouraz in the
northern province of Gilan.
Archeological work during the recent years in Gilan have led to
the discovery of important ancient sites in such areas as Talesh,
Marlik and Maryan, but in none of them architectural remains
have been unearthed.
Preliminary studies in the historical site of Kalouraz, however,
have led the researchers to believe that the hill has once been
the government center of the area, surrounded by graveyards, and
that remains of Gilan ancient architecture dating to more than
the third millennium B.C. can probably be found in the site.
According to head of the excavation team of Kalouraz, Mohammad
Reza Khalatbari, the discovery can both provide information on
residence, architecture, and administrative and governmental
characteristics of the region, and answer many questions raised
about its history.
Previous work in the area had resulted in the discovery of
potsherds and remains of human skeletons.
