Studies carried out in the East Azarbaijan
province have led to the discovery of some 1,000 historical
sites from the 6th millennium B.C. until the Pahlavi dynasty.
The northwestern province has been a place for human settlement
since millennia B.C. given its particular climatic conditions.
Still little systematic studies have been conducted in the area.
An official with the local cultural heritage organization
Mahsima Nehzati noted surveys started in 1991 and were not half
way through rendering about 1,000 historical sites.
“Studies carried out in 19 towns have led to discovery of
sites from the Neolithic period, i.e. the 6th millennia B.C.
until the Pahlavi dynasty,” she added. “They include
churches, Imamzadehs, historical sites, ancient cemeteries,
etc.”
The studies are expected to take at least five years but there
are signs to believe that relics may be found that may even
predate the Neolithic era.
