New Discoveries in Minab Plain

26 May 2004

The first excavation season in the Minab Plain, in the southern province of Hormozgan, has so far led to the discovery of new items from different historical periods.

The stone instruments found may scale back age of the area to some 15,000 years before Christ, explained head of the archeology team, Siamak Sarlak.

Eighty-five other historical items from the Arsacid to Safavid era have also been discovered in Minab, which necessitate more studies to be carried out.

Moreover, according to an official of the Hormozgan Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department, Majid Goharshenas, clay pieces found in the area date to the Arsacid times to 11th centuries, Teimurids, Safavids, Zands and Qajar era. The pieces are similar to those of India in terms of their form and color, indicating that the area has had close links and cultural interactions with the neighboring civilization.

Minab Plain underwent limited excavations before the Islamic Revolution, and the new season has been continuing since February 2004.
