Earthquake Caused Damage to Alamut Castle

29 May 2004

A strong earthquake which shook northern Iran on Friday tore down part of the watchtower of the Alamut fortress in the central Qazvin province.

Measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, the temblor rocked the Gazarkhan village which houses the citadel.

There are no reports of the damages to other historical sites in the area. Earlier, Iranian cultural heritage officials had announced that the Alamut area had its dossier prepared for nomination for inscription on the UNESCO’s natural and historical heritage.

Alamut is a unique area with historical fortresses, historical sites, exceptional wild life and natural landscapes.

The damaged part of the Alamut fortress was a wall behind the Hassan Sabah fortress, known as Hoodakan.

Meanwhile, cultural heritage officials in neighboring provinces say there has been on report on damages to other historical sites, including those in Qazvin, Mazandaran, Tehran, Zanjan and Gilan provinces.
