The historic- cultural site of Tabaran, in
eastern Khorasan, with its buried historical remains is to be
studied without excavation, by application of a new technologies
and geophysics techniques.
Since 2000, some 270 boring pits have been made in Tabaran and
Tus, unearthing some of the historical remains of the old city
of Tabaran, explained head of the project, Saberi, adding that
more archeological studies are underway in the northern parts of
the site. However, they are time consuming and the application
of new technologies will help speed up the work.
The geophysics method is one of the newest archeological
research techniques of the world which enables the researchers
to scan the levels underneath the earth surface, determining the
existence or otherwise of historical remains without the need to
dig boring pits. As a result, archeologists can concentrate
their work on the areas with higher probability of success and
speed.
Tabaran is included on Iran’s national heritage list and the
Iranian Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization intends to
revive it as the first historic-cultural city of Iran. However,
since it is one of the few villages that due to its cultural and
tourist features have attracted immigrants during the years, its
revival and preservation requires establishment of larger
perimeters for the site.
The historical city of Tabaran, encompasses Tus area where the
famous Iranian epic poet Master Ferdowsi lies in his eternal
life, plus an old fortresses with unique structure.
Archeological studies of the area can shed light on its
different historical eras, but its vastness and the existing
residential units impede traditional archeological studies,
making the new geophysics technique a viable alternative.
