Remnants of 1,000-Year-Old Mosque Found

16 November 2004

The remnants of a 1,000-year-old mosque have been unearthed near the southern town of Baft, in Kerman province.

Ancient mounds are the only trace of the mosque and a tablet carved on the mountain face prove the monument's antiquity, an official with the provincial Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (CHTO) said.

The inscription is written in the Kufic script exactly 1,000 years ago. "The tablet was submitted to Kerman's Museum of Stone-Carved Tablets at Jabalieh Dome to be examined and safeguarded," he concluded.
