Some Bam Passageways Cleared of Rubble

11 September 2004

Iranian archeologists have managed to clear of rubble some 600 meters of alleys and passageways in the Bam Citadel, which was almost razed in a massive quake in last December.

“Over the past few months, we have scooped out ruins to make more space near the bazaar and the main entrance,” announced Iskandar Mokhtari, head of the salvage and renovation project.

“It is a painstakingly delicate task and meanwhile we document and study the mud-brick structure. We have some plans to recycle the rubble or at least put it on display in some sort of exhibit.”

The restoration project was launched by an international team of experts a couple of months after the quake.
