Discovery of a Neolithic Site at Gavkhooni Swamp, Esfahan

19 July 2005

A Neolithic site has been unearthed at Gavkhooni Swamp in the southeastern part of Isfahan province, reported IRNA.

Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department in Isfahan province said that the latest findings pointed to the existence of an ancient civilization in the region.

“Influenced by the ancient civilizations in the region, major cities have been established throughout history along the banks of Zayandeh-roud River,“ the department said.

Archeological studies will continue to determine the layers of ancient civilizations.

Zayandeh-roud River rises in the mountains of Chalgard in Chahar Mahal-Bakhtiari province and flows through hundreds of villages, towns and cities irrigating farmlands before pouring into Gavkhooni Swamp in the southeast of Isfahan province.

The river has contributed to the formation of many ancient civilizations along its entire course.
