104 Forts Identified in Sistan-Baluchistan

08 June 2005

Director general of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department said that 104 ancient forts have been identified throughout Sistan-Baluchistan province.

Hassan Sargazi told IRNA that out of this, 38 forts have been registered as national heritage sites.
“Saravan ranks first with 25 forts, while Sarbaz and Khash have the least,“ he noted, adding that Zabol, Chabahar, Iranshahr, Nikshahr and Zahedan have 14, 17, 18, 14 and six forts respectively.

The antiquity of the historical forts range from the Achaemenid to the Sassanid eras,“ he pointed out.
Sargazi further stated that out of 780 historical monuments, which have so far been identified in the province, 173 monuments have been registered on the national heritage list.

He hoped that more than 10,000 monuments will be identified in Sistan-Baluchistan province until the end of the fourth five-year development plan.
