DNA Samples Extracted From Second Salt Man

18 June 2005

A team of Iranian researchers led by Mehdi Hosseini Mazinani and Jalal Kuch-Meshki recently extracted the first DNA samples from the Second Salt Man.

A very small sample from bone, part of the chest tissue, as well as a few strands of hair were selected for the primary studies which led to the extraction of the DNA samples.

Kuch-Meshki said that the DNA test shows that the Second Salt Man was in good physical condition and was over 185 centimeters tall.

The DNA studies will provide more information about the genetic structure of the human race and genetic changes over the years, he added.

The remains of the Second Salt Man were discovered at the Hamzehlu salt mine near Zanjan in northwest Iran . It is still not clear when the Second Salt Man lived, but the remains were found about 30 to 40 meters from the place where the 1700-year-old First Salt Man was discovered.
