The
comprehensive map of the ancient city of Yazd will
be revised to restore and reinforce the city's
cultural heritage structures.
The Urban and Architecture News Agency (UAN) said
that a comprehensive map of Yazd was compiled in
1992 and has been approved by Iran's Cultural
Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO).
However, the historical sites in the city and the
old buildings need reinforcement to endure.
Masoud Jaafarian director of Urban Development and
Architecture Department of Yazd said that the
decision to review the comprehensive map of Yazd
was intended at reconstructing the historical
texture of the city and turning Yazd into a
tourist site.
"The current texture of Yazd needs renovation
as well as urban development. Otherwise, the
historical buildings will be gradually ruined and
people living there will abandon the area."
Jaafarian said that to safeguard cultural heritage
sites, ICHTO has objected to the urban development
projects for the city and the process of
broadening the streets of Yazd has been put on
hold.
Citing contradiction between urban development and
protection of cultural heritage, he said that in
order to set up advanced transport networks, the
old streets of Yazd need to be widened, but, the
projects could not be carried out owing to
objection from ICHTO.
He said that majority of the people living in the
old quarters of the city have moved to newly built
housing districts of Safaeiyeh and Imam Shahr on
the outskirt of Yazd.
