Pasargadae and Mausoleum of Cyrus the Great Not Expected to be Submerged!

07 September 2005

CAIS - Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) announced on Tuesday that once Sivand Dam is filled with water, part of Tanghe-Bolaghi containing historical relics of various eras will be submerged, except Pasargadae and the Mausoleum of Cyrus the Great.

The report released by ICHTO Public Relations Department on Wednesday said that Sivand Dam is currently under construction at Tanghe-Bolaghi 95 kms to the north of Shiraz, 70 kms from Persepolis and 17 kms from Pasargadae.

The release of such a news is alarming, as no archaeologist has so far been concern with the submersion of the Pasargadae or mausoleum of Cyrus the Great. The perimeters of the future artificial lake behind the dam at its largest reach is 7 kilometres from Pasargadae site and 9 kilometres from the mausoleum which is situated 45 meter above the water level after the inundation of dam.

It seems this is a 'negative-rumor' propagated by the government, to divert attentions from the main threat to Pasargadae and the mausoleum, which is the humidity, produced by the artificial lake behind the dam, which despite CAIS previous warnings, it is totally ignored by the experts and the concerned public.
