Plans
to construct a ring road and boulevard in
Qaemshahr have been suspended since last year due
to an ancient mound on the route of the project,
IRNA reported.
Archeologists conducting excavations at the site
in 1993 came across artifacts such as potteries,
daggers and other cultural items which dated back
to the first millennium BC. This discovery led to
inclusion of the site on the national cultural
heritage list.
Despite the 90 percent progress of the project,
construction of the road, which began in 1996, was
suspended following the intervention of Cultural
Heritage and Tourism Department.
Head of Qaemshahr City Council said that it
reached an agreement with Cultural Heritage and
Tourism Department to proceed with the project
after removing the artifacts from the hill.
Komeil Gouran added that the Municipality has
allocated a sum of 50 million rials for
excavations at the site so that the problem can be
solved before the onset of the rainy season.
Following consultations between the Municipality
and Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department
officials in recent months, it was agreed that a
square be constructed at the site to save the
mound, he concluded.
