State of Disrepair
Tower [formerly known as Shahyâd-e Âryâmehr], a
landmark of the Iran's capital city and venue of
numerous political gatherings, is currently in
pressing need of repair and restoration works.
According to the Persian daily Iran, preliminary
studies on repairing the tower have been conducted
and the technicalities have been reviewed.
Deputy Tehran Mayor for technical and development
affairs Mohammad Aliabadi said that Tehran
Municipality has submitted a report to the parliament
seeking funds to repair the tower and the issue is
being followed up by Tehran Municipal Council.
Underground structures of the tower had been
reserved for cultural activities and they badly
need repair to avert damages to the high rise
Tehran Municipal Councilor Rasoul Khadem said that
some seven billion rials will be needed to repair
the building adding that the condition of the
tower is a cause of worry.
He said that underground structures of the tower
have become weak in the past 34 years since its
construction and need to be reinforced.
Tehran Municipality officials said that the
underground structure, which accounts for more
than half of the entire area of 10,000 square
meters of Azadi Square, has been weakened by
seeping water in the past three decades which
require technical overhaul at the earliest.
