Nine Different Types of Sasanid Coins Identified Among Recent Discoveries

14 April 2005

Emperor Ardashir I (224 - 242 AD)

AR Drachm 23 mm. - 3.96 gm.

Studies and documentation of 110 coins discovered during the recent years in the western province of Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad shows that the coins belonged to 9 Kings of the Sasanid dynasty.

According to head of the research sector of the Cultural Heritage Department of Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad, Kurosh Alamdari, the coins are categorized as belonging to different eras of the Sassanid Kingdom, with the oldest dating to Shapour I and the latest to Hormoz V. The largest number of coins identified from one king is 57 belonging to Khosro II.

The lightest coin just weighs 1/21 and the heaviest 4/12 grams.

These 110 coins have been either excavated or regained from looters during the recent years. They will be sent to Yasuj Museum (capital of the Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad) after the studies are complete and they are documented.
