More Potsherds Found in Persepolis Sewage System

The cleansing of Persepolis sewage system in the depth of 7 meters have led to the discovery of more potsherds, brining the number of pieces found so far to a total 600.

Persepolis complex, located near Shiraz, is one of Iran’s registered world heritage sites. The canals of the complex which run beneath the podium and palaces form a systematically designed system. So far more than 2 kilometers of the system has been identified and is under study.

According to head of the excavation team of the canals, Alireza Asgari, the dredging work in the canals is now progressing very slowly due to lack of air in the depth of 7 meters and the hardness of the sediments inside the canals.

“So far, some 600 potsherds and eight sediment layers have been identified. Most of these clay pieces have been pulled out from the lower layers,” explained Asgari.

The potsherds are of different types and are colored in orange, red, and yellow.

Another discovery of experts during the recent work has been a canal blocked by large rock, the reason of which is not yet known.
