Private
collectors will now be able to apply to the Cultural Heritage and Tourism
Organization (CHTO) for licenses to establish private museums.
“In
order to maintain the cooperation of the private sector, the CHTO will be
allowed to issue licenses for the establishment of private museums,
institutes involved in cultural heritage activities, workshops for
renovating artifacts, and traditional art workshops,” part of Article
114 of the law reads.
The
serious problems of illegal excavations and smuggling of ancient artifacts
were also discussed during the cabinet session.
Most
experts believe that private collectors have done a great service by
collecting ancient Iranian artifacts and preventing the items from being
taken out of the country.
An
exhibition of collections of private collectors was held at the National
Museum of Iran during Cultural Heritage Week (May 18-24).
