Ancient Rock Paintings Found in Hamedan

29 July 2005

An Iranian archeologist, Javad Baba-Piri, has come across a number of ancient paintings on rocks in the foothills of the Alvand Mountains in Hamedan, reported ISNA.

The paintings, which date back to the prehistoric era, were found in the ’Doustali’ and ’Two Sisters’ regions as well as in Dizin Village in the eastern part of Merianj and in the southern foothill of Alvand Mountain.

The rocks were formed in the third geological era.

The paintings depict mountain goat which was probably a national game at the time. Young people riding on horses can also be seen in the paintings.

One of the paintings shows a human figure standing beside a mountain goat which could probably indicate how humans learned to tame animals.

Archeologists have come across paintings on rocks and walls of caves in Hamedan.
