Two-leveled
Platform Unearthed Behind Ay-Doghumoush Dam

Excavations
behind the Ay-Doghumoush Dam in Eastern Azarbaijan
has led to the discovery of a two-storey platform
dating to some five thousand years ago.
Ay-Doghumoush dam is located in Kola historical
site, south of Mianeh, Eastern Azarbaijan and
includes remains of the Bronze Age and the Iron
Age. The historical hill is 20 meters high and one
hectare vast.
According to Javad Ghandgar, head of the salvation
project of Kola, residents of the area built
architectural structures on the two-storey clay
platform from the third millennium BC up to the
second millennium BC.
The newly discovered structure which is built on a
natural hill most probably helped the residents to
create leveled areas on which they could build
their residential structures. The distance of each
level from the next is four meters, and remains of
three architectural constructions have been
discovered over them.
The clay levels are unique and nothing similar to
them has ever been found in other archaeological
sites of Iran, Ghandgar told CHN.
Experts have started undertaking the salvation
project of Kola site behind the Ay Dogumoush Dam a
few weeks ago. They estimate that at least one
year is needed to completing save the heritage
behind the dam, the flooding of which has already
started. Discoveries in the area so far include
potsherds, a clay statue, and some architectural
remains.
