Archaeologists to Work in Abyaneh Village for the First Time

11 June 2005

The historical world-famous village of Abyaneh, in the central province of Kashan, is to undergo archaeological excavations for the first time ever.

Abyaneh village with its unique reddish structures is one of the oldest villages of Iran which attracts a great number of domestic and foreign tourists all throughout the year, especially in times of traditional feasts and ceremonies.

The village has never been a target of archaeological excavations, but that is going to change with a new agreement between Abyaneh Research Center and the Archaeology Research Center of the Iranian Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO).

The restoration and revival of the historical village has been among one of the major projects of the ICHTO in the recent years, but no excavations have been carried out so far.

“The excavations which will be launched this year are to help identify the historical identity of the village and dating the human settlement there. Locations of the village will be selected by archaeologists for digging boring pots and carrying out scientific excavations,” director of Abyaneh Research Center, Azimeh Riyahi, told CHN.

According to Riyahi, the village is being documented by the Research Center and undoubtedly the excavations can help complement the project.
