Ancient City of Sirvan to be Excavated

The Iranian Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) is to relocated the habitants of Sarab-Kalan villagers to facilitated an archaeological research to bring out the 2000-year-old city of Siravan from under the ground.

Village of Sirvan, located 70 kilometers north of the capital of the western province of Ilam, functioned as a lively city until the 10th century. Most of its structures are made of stone and stucco. The architectural style of buildings of the city is comparable to that of the remaining ones of the Sasanid-Islamic city of Darreh shahr.

Talks between the ICHTO, Ilam province governor office, the municipality, and the village council to move Sarab-Kalan villagers has finally reached a conclusion after three years and the project is soon to be carried out.

By provision of the necessary budget by the ICHTO and the Housing Foundation of Iran, the project will be launched to revive and restore the ancient city of Sirvan.

“Sirvan is registered as one of Iran’s National Heritage, but we do not yet have the permission to start excavating the area, and this will cause further deterioration of this ancient Sasanid city,” explained technical deputy of Ilam ICHTO, Maryam Gheimati, adding that to start a comprehensive excavation in the area, Sarab-Kalan village should be completely moved to elsewhere.
