Most
historic edifices and monuments in Masjed Soleiman,
Khuzestan province have been without proper
protection and under constant threat from vandals
and smugglers.
The most important historic monument in the
region, 'Chah Shomareye Yek' (Number One Well), is
the only site which is well protected since it is
still under the custody of the National Iranian
Oil Company.
Stating the above to ISNA, Farid Kavosh, executive
secretary of the Cultural Heritage Fans
Association of Masjed Soleiman said, "Despite
the establishment of the department, most historic
monuments receive no protection from cultural
officials. The department has conducted some
useful works in other areas, but the historic
monuments in Masjed Soleiman have been largely
neglected."
He
stressed that it is the duty of Iran's Cultural
Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) to
protect, refurbish, identify and promote the
region's cultural heritage, adding that members of
the association have also notified the
department's head office in Ahvaz but to no avail.
Kavosh urged cultural officials to take effective
measures to protect historic sites and monuments
as promised earlier during the visit to Masjed
Soleiman by vice president and the head of the
ICHTO, Hossein Marashi.
