Ancient
Food Storage Discovered in Bam
Citadel

Excavation
of the south part of the barracks in Bam Citadel
led to the discovery of a hidden food storage of
the soldiers.
The historical of Bam Citadel is one of the
biggest adobe complexes in the world which
according to the experts dates back to Sassanid
era. The citadel and its cultural landscape were
registered on UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.
“Excavations of the clay wall led to the finding
of a hole which was covered with small pieces of
stones, bricks, hays and animal waste. After
removing them, some traces of vetch and wheat were
found in the hole. It seems from the appearance of
the hole and the little amount of the seeds
discovered that it must have been a secret place
for hiding food in time of famine” says Eskandar
Mokhtari, head of the Bam Salvation Project.
The main part of Bam complex, which is a complete
city containing different parts including bazaar,
different quarters, and an alcove part, was
destroyed by an earthquake two years ago. Since
then, different foreign and Iranian experts have
tried to study and save the complex from further
damage.
The earthen city of Bam is one of the most
important historical and cultural cities of Iran
and the world, an age-old city belonging to 2000
years ago.
