Jiroft Fossils Are Eight Million Years Old

10 September 2005

Studies on the discovered mammal fossils in Jiroft city, in Kerman province, which had amazed experts, indicate that the fossils must have belonged to the third geology period (around 7-8 million years ago).

“The discovered fossils are not as old as the ones discovered before. The oldest discovered fossil in Kerman province is that of a 600 million- year-old vertebrate. Besides, in south east of Kerman, north of Kouhbenan, some crustacean fossils belonging to 570 BC have been found. There are also some fossils in different parts of Kerman especially north of the province which belonged to more than 380 million years ago,” says Mohamad Dastanpour, geologist and professor of Shahid Bahonar University
of Kerman.

The most important discovery in Kerman was that of the herbivorous dinosaurs in the north west of Zarand city earlier this year. The animal lived during the Lower Jurassic epoch (180-208 million years ago), which had wide feet like elephants with three fingers. Previous to this, in the fossil areas of Kerman, five footprints belonging to Camptosaurus had been discovered.
