Mazandaran Historical Sites, Victims of Alborz Dam

10 September 2005

Recent studies in Mazandaran Province indicate that several historical cemeteries, villages, and Imamzadehs will be devoured by the reservoir of the Alborz Dam when it is filled with water next year, archaeologist Mehdi Abedini announced on Saturday.

Abedini, who is the head of the team of archaeologists currently working at the historical site of Lafor in Savadkuh, Mazandaran Province, added that the sites include six historical cemeteries, nine villages, and several Imamzadehs, which are tombs of descendents of the Imams.

“The Laforak Cemetery is a unique one dating back to the Iron Age, and Aheh and Espo Kola cemeteries belong to the early Islamic eras. The villages of Laforak, Geshnian, Haji Kola, Chak Sara, Chasht Khoran, Mir Kola, and Galesh Kola will also be submerged,” he stated.

According to Abedini, an irreplaceable part of the ancient culture of Mazandaran Province will vanish forever due to the construction of the dam.
