LONDON,
(CAIS) -- The second season of archeological
excavations carried out by the Iranian-Japanese joint team
in Bolaghi Valley led to discovery of the remains of stone
tools and the bones of different animals belonging to the
Paleolithic age, some 10000 years ago. A cave near Sivand
Dam was chosen for the excavations of the Iran-Japan joint
team, reported the Cultural Heritage News Agency (CHN) on
Sunday.
“The excavation team succeeded in identifying a large
amount of stone tools dating back to the Paleolithic age
which can be very helpful in discovery the method of
making tools in this historical site during pre-historic
times. In addition to these stone tools, a large amount of
animal bones have been discovered during this season of
excavations which are very important in discovery the diet
habits of people of the area during that era,” said
Mohsen Zeidi, Iranian head of Iran-Japan joint team in
Bolaghi Valley.
The second season of Iran-Japan joint archeological
excavations started from 16th of July and run to 7th of
August 2006 in area no TB75. The first season of
excavations were carried out in area no TB130 during last
summer. According to Zeidi, the sample of coals has been
gathered for C14 testing during this season of
excavation.
“Comparing the achievements of these two periods
revealed that settlement of human beings in this area
should have dated back to the beginning of the Paleolithic
era in the east of Zagros Mountains. The importance of
these achievements is to find out the trend of
agricultural development and pastoral life in Eastern part
of Zagros Mountains. We established two
excavation-workshops in the area which we succeeded in
discovery of some cultural evidence belonging to the
beginning of the Paleolithic age. We will determine the
exact time of the discovered evidence through C14
dating system,” added Zeidi.
Bolaghi Valley is an archeological site in Fars province
which will be flooded once the nearby Sivand Dam is
inaugurated, the date of which has not yet been
determined. Archeologists are speeding-up their salvage operations
at this historic site to save as much as possible the
evidence of thousands of years of civilizations before the
entire area is submerged. The salvation project in Bolaghi
Valley started with the engagement of eight international
and a number of Iranian teams more than two years ago and
continues to this day. The recent excavations by the joint
Iranian-Japanese team have revealed that the existence of
human settlements in Bolaghi Valley dating back to 10,000
years ago.
