NEWS UPDATE: Seminar to Save the Bolaghi Gorge

23 February 2006

LONDON, (CAIS) -- The first conference on Tang-e Bolaghi, a historical site in Fars province, attended by archaeologists from around the world is currently being held in Shiraz, reported the Persian daily Jaam-e Jam.

Announcing this, head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization’s (ICHTO) Research Center, Dr Masoud Azarnoush said that Iranian and foreign archaeologists will present the findings of their two-year research studies about Pasargad and Bolaghi Gorge at the event.

The capacity of the reservoir of Sivand Dam, which is under construction in the areas is 250 million cubic meters, he said adding that the construction of the dam began in 1992 and has so far made 70 percent progress.

“Fortunately, the problems created by Sivand Dam led to archaeological studies about safeguarding the cultural heritage of the region.

There is not doubt that this plan will be implemented for the first time at the national and international levels,“ he said.

“Some reports say that Sivand Dam threatened the tomb of the Achaemenid King of Kings, Cyrus the Great in Pasargad as well as the ancient city of Persepolis, which is 50 kilometers away from the dam. The historical complex is 150 meters lower than the dam,“ said Azarnoush.

He added that 10 Iranian and foreign archaeological teams have been freely conducting excavations at Bolaghi Gorge for the past two years. Secretary of the conference Hamid Fahimi said that archaeologists from Germany, Japan, Poland, Italy, France and Iran will reveal their findings at the conference.

He added that a photo exhibit is also underway on the sidelines of the conference.
