LONDON,
(CAIS) -- Following an announcement by a private
foundation to select Seven Wonders of Modern World, a
lawmaker, Hassan Abbasi has called on Iran’s Cultural
Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) to take action
to register one of Iranian cultural heritage on the list,
reported IRNA.
Abbasi recently took over as the head the parliment's'
Cultural Heritage and Tourism Commission. Iran, which
ranked eighth in the world in terms of possessing ancient
monuments and cultural heritage sites, deserves a place on
the list, he said.
Criticizing UNESCO for its failure to take action in this
respect, he urged ICHTO to do its best to include Iranian
cultural heritage on the list of Seven Wonders of Modern
World.
He said that Iran is required to invest in promoting
tourism by introducing its historical monuments to the
international community.
Foundation for Seven Wonders of Modern World, which is a
private enterprise, is conducting an opinion poll on 21
monuments in 2006 by interviewing people on the telephone
and via the Internet to select Seven Wonders of the Modern
World out of the 21 proposed monuments and will announce
the outcome of the opinion poll on January 01, 2007.
The list includes the Great Wall of China, Acropolis of
Athens, Coliseum of Rome, Sydney Opera House in Australia,
Eiffel Tower of Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New
York.
The MP said that it is surprising that none of the Iranian
monuments such as Persepolis, Naqsh-e Jahan Square of
Isfahan, which have been registered on the UNESCO List of
Global Cultural Heritage, were not on the list.
